Intro. to Graphic Design
Chris Adams, CEO and Co-Founder of Dreamr, will be teaching Introduction to Graphic Design this Saturday, October 17th at The Dreamr Lab at Durango Hills YMCA. Class in session! In case you were unable to get a seat, here is a recording of the class and a step-by-step guide for the Dreamr logo design. Follow along!
STEP 01: CREATE NEW DOCUMENT
From the top, let’s look at the different document settings that you’ll need to know about when setting up a new document. First, name your document! Common file naming etiquette include the following: no special characters other than a dash or underscore and no spaces. I like to start off with a square artboard (3000px for hi-res); you can change the measurement units in the dropdown menu (e.g. centimeters, inches, etc.). The “Bleed” of a document indicates to the printer that an image or graphic should print off the page; by adjusting the bleed, this will help the printer know where to cut. Depending on if this design is meant for print or digital media, you would change your Color Mode to CMYK (print) or RGB (digital); typically RGB will be more vibrant than CMYK. Lastly on the document settings window, for high quality designs, you would select Medium (150 ppi) or higher. PPI stands for “Pixels Per Inch”; the more pixels, the more details. After you’ve set up your new document, hit the Create button!
STEP 02: CREATE GUIDES
Select the Line Segment tool with the ‘\’shortcut. Draw a line across the artboard horizontally and vertically. Select both lines and press ‘cmd + 5’ or View menu > Guides > Make Guides; rename the layer in the Layers panel and lock the layer.
STEP 03: PLACE REFERENCE PHOTO
Create New Layer, rename it, and drag it beneath the GUIDE layer. To place image, hold ‘shift + cmd + P’ and align the image in the center of the artboard. Double-click on the reference layer and check Template, and select OK and lock layer.
STEP 04: CREATE CIRCLE
Use the Ellipse tool (or press ‘L’) to draw a circle (hold ‘shift + cmd + opt’ to create a perfect circle. Align the edge of the circle with the reference photo. Adjust the size and place it in the right position.
STEP 05: DUPLICATE THE CIRCLE
Duplicate the circle by selecting the circle, hold ‘opt + shift’ and drag 2nd circle to the left. Then, align the right edge along the reference photo.
STEP 06: USE SHAPE BUILDER TOOL TO CREATE LEAF SHAPE
Select the Shape Builder tool (‘shift’ + ‘W’), hold ‘opt’, and click on the outer part of the circles. You did it! You’ve created the flower pedal. Now, we have to duplicate this shape to form a flower.
STEP 07: USE ROTATE TOOL
Select the Rotate tool (press ‘R’), and left click in the center of the guidelines, so we can rotate the pedal from the center of the logo mark. After you’ve moved the anchor point to the center of the logo, duplicate the pedal (hold ‘opt’) and drag leaf to the next pedal placement. Duplicate action by holding ‘cmd + D’ till the flower has formed.
STEP 08: COMPLETE FLOWER OF LIFE
Select one of the pedals and duplicate it by holding ‘opt’ while dragging the shape to an outer pedal. Rotate the shape as needed to perfectly align with the reference photo.
Repeat [STEP 08] to complete the right side of the flower.
STEP 09: REFLECT OUTER PEDALS
Select the outer pedals, right-click > Transform > Reflect > vertical reflection, check ‘Copy’ and hit ‘OK’. Drag the pedals to the left to complete Dreamr’s flower of life logomark.
STEP 10: CHANGE THE COLOR
Use any of the following color HEX codes: #2DECB6, #46A7DE, #201B58, #EE2F24, or #F9A62F.
YOU’VE COMPLETED THE DREAMR LOGOMARK!
Good job! You did it! You’ve recreated the Dreamr logomark.
